I love movies and I love baseball, so what can be better than a movie about baseball? Nothing.
So I decided to compile a list of my Top 5 Baseball Movies. I’m going to break it up into a children’s version and adult version because there’s just too many to sort through. So here they are, and if you disagree or think I forgot one, let me know.
#5: The Bad News Bears 1976 (Rated: PG)
It’s an oldie but a goodie and it’s not to be confused with the awful remake that came out in 2005 (which
had to be rated PG-13 due to Billy Bob Thornton’s awful performance). How can you not love a guy who is a lazy, beer swilling swimming pool cleaner who takes money to coach the Bears, a bunch of disheveled misfits who have virtually no baseball talent. The best part of course is that a girl comes to the rescue and is the ace pitcher on the team.
#4: Little Big League 1994 (Rated: PG)
Every kid’s dream…to own a baseball team (too bad Gramps had to croak to get it though). 12 year-old Billy Heywood loves baseball, knows the game inside out and now he owns the Minnesota Twins. The team is pretty crappy and the players hate the manager, so he fires him and decides to run the team himself. At first the players don’t like taking orders from a kid, but soon they realize he knows his stuff and there is of course a happy ending.
#3: Rookie of the Year 1993 (Rated: PG)
Okay I take it back…thisis every kids dream (minus the breaking your arm part). 12-year-old Henry Rowengartner is not the best baseball player, which is pretty evident when he slips on a baseball and breaks his arm. His arm heals funny and as a result, he is able to throw a baseball over 100mph. He is discovered by the Chicago Cubs, who are in desperate need of some help. He becomes the biggest phenom in MLB and takes the Cubs to the World Series. This movie has it all…wacky characters, a love story and of course their is a lesson to be learned.
#2: Angels in the Outfield 1994 (Rated: PG)
Roger and his buddy J.P. live in a foster home. Roger’s dad says that they can be a family again if the California Angels win the pennant…the only problem is that the Angels are in last place. So Roger prays for some help and he gets some…in the form of actual angels. Christopher Llyod plays Al, the head angel who with the help of his fellow angels lead the Angels (the baseball team) all the way to the playoffs. But the love doesnt stop there…George Knox, the Angels grumpy manager discovers his soft side and ends up adopting both Roger and J.P. This movie just leaves you with a warm feeling inside. Oh and look out for a young Matthew McConaughey and Adrien Brody as some hapless baseball players.
#1: The Sandlot 1993 (Rated: PG)
If you didn’t know that this was going to be Number 1, then you really have no business reading this list at all. The Sandlot is the ultimate kid’s baseball movie. Scott Smalls is the new kid and desperately wants to learn to play baseball and make some friend. The neighborhood baseball hero Benny Rodriquez takes Smalls under his wing, and soon he’s part of the local baseball buddies. They have the summer of their lives, playing baseball, having treehouse sleep-ins, lusting after the desirous lifeguard at the local pool, and beating the snooty rival baseball team. But beyond the fence at the back of the sandlot is The Beast, a legendary ball-eating dog. But when The Beast gets ahold of a ball signed by Babe Ruth is when the adventures really begin. If you know a kid who likes baseball, or anyone who likes baseball, you gotta watch this movie.
